On Saturday, more than 20 “tire-less” members and friends of the Rotary Club of Hilo dragged, pulled and wrestled 9 tons of trash from a ditch in Kaumana as part of their “Malama Honua” (care for the land) July projects.

This was the third cleanup and clearing activity the club performed this month.

In addition to more than 50 tires collected and taken to Lex Brodies for recycling, club members and friends hauled away a three-piece sectional furniture set, televisions, baby items and other trash from the difficult terrain. The rubbish then was loaded into a Matson container to be taken to the landfill.

“A big mahalo goes out to Rob Landgraf, our tractor operator,” said Wally Wong, club president and organizer of the cleanup. “Rob’s tractor was able to load all the trash into the Matson container.

“Without that help, we would have been there twice as long. And loading the three-piece sectional would have been very difficult to lift and most unpleasant.

“And a second mahalo goes out to Subway sandwiches and salads for providing lunch,” Wong said.

The club hopes people will not dump trash at the location again and is planning to place signs around the area to reinforce the warning that dumping is not allowed.

The Rotary Club of Hilo, the second-oldest club in the state, will celebrate its 95th birthday in December.
